How much does it cost to fill a 275-gallon tank?

At the U.S. average of $6.233 a gallon in the EIA survey of Oct 26, 2026, 275 gallons of heating oil costs $1,714.07 before taxes and delivery fees. The same 275 gallons of propane costs $750.75 at $2.730 a gallon, but propane holds less heat per gallon, so the cheaper tank is not automatically the cheaper winter.

A nominal 275-gallon tank rarely takes 275 gallons in one delivery: the tank still holds some fuel, and dealers leave room for expansion. You pay for the gallons delivered, not for the number printed on the tank. The table below gives the 275-gallon sum for every area EIA reports, using the latest survey for each fuel.

Prices are EIA residential averages in dollars per gallon, excluding taxes. A dash means EIA does not report that fuel for the area. Source: U.S. Energy Information Administration.

What the number leaves out

  • Taxes. EIA’s survey prices exclude state and local taxes, so your bill will be higher.
  • Delivery fees and small-order charges. Many dealers charge extra below a minimum delivery, often 100 to 150 gallons.
  • Your dealer’s own price. The survey gives a state, regional or national average; prices vary between dealers, towns and payment terms (cash, budget plan, pre-buy).
  • Propane tank capacity. Propane tanks are filled to about 80% of their size, so a 500-gallon tank takes about 400 gallons from empty.

Prices come from the weekly Heating Oil and Propane Update by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. See about the data.

Questions

How much does 275 gallons of heating oil cost?

At the U.S. average of $6.233 a gallon in the EIA survey of Oct 26, 2026, 275 gallons of heating oil costs $1,714.07 before taxes and delivery fees. The table above gives the same sum for every state EIA reports, and for propane.

Does a 275-gallon tank take 275 gallons?

Rarely. A delivery fills only the space above the fuel still in the tank, and dealers leave room for expansion, so a nearly empty nominal 275-gallon tank usually takes less. You pay for the gallons delivered, not for the size printed on the tank.

Is this the price my dealer will charge?

No. EIA publishes average residential prices for whole states and regions, not a quote from any dealer. Taxes, delivery fees, small-order charges and your payment terms are not included here. Use the average as a benchmark when you call for quotes.

Why is the propane figure different from heating oil?

A gallon of propane holds less heat than a gallon of heating oil, so the two prices per gallon are not directly comparable. 275 gallons of propane costs $750.75 at the U.S. average of $2.730, but it delivers less heat; the heating cost calculator compares them for the same winter of heat.
